The geography of India is as diverse as its people. The tranquil backwaters of Kerala, the lush tea gardens of Darjeeling, the golden deserts of Rajasthan, and the pristine beaches of Goa—all come together to create a visual symphony. The towering peaks of the Himalayas offer breathtaking trekking routes and spiritual retreats, while the vast Thar Desert promises unforgettable camel safaris beneath star-studded skies.

Climate and Weather in India

India’s climate is incredibly diverse due to its vast size and geographical variations. From the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the tropical shores in the south, each region experiences its own unique climate patterns. Generally, India has three major seasons: summer, monsoon, and winter.

Here is a season-wise insight of the weather in India:
  1. Summer (March – June)

The summer months are typically hot and dry in most parts of India. The northern plains, central India, and parts of the west can experience scorching temperatures, often exceeding 40°C to 50°C (104°F to 122°F)

    The
southern and coastal regions tend to be more moderate, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F)

    Pack:
Light and breathable clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are essential for this season.

  2. Monsoon (June-September)

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to most parts of India. The temperature drops to 20-35°C (77°F to 95°F), but humidity levels rise significantly.

    Pack:
Rain jackets, umbrellas, rainproof footwear, waterproof covers for your gadgets, waterproof bags, power banks, hiking boots (if you plan to trek).

  3. Winter (November – February)

Winter varies across the country, with northern regions experiencing chilly temperatures, especially in the mountains, while southern regions remain milder.

In northern areas like Delhi, Agra, and Rajasthan, temperatures can drop to around 5°C (41°F) or lower. The states lining the Himalayas often experience snowfall and negative temperatures, while most coastal states boast a steady 20-35°C (77°F to 95°F).

    Pack:
Warm layers, sweaters, and jackets for north India & lighter clothing for south India.

  11. UPI/Online Wallets in India
UPI is one of the many services that revolutionised digital payments in India. Anyone with a bank account can now transfer funds with a single tap.

GPay PhonePe and Paytm work well in India but may not have the same user case worldwide i.e. one country’s application does not work in other countries.

If you are an international digital nomad looking to simplify
payments in India through UPI, you can get a special wallet at select airports in India (Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai).
As of now, the service is available primarily to residents of the G20 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States), and the European Union.

This can ease your struggles with credit cards and reduce your need for carrying liquid cash since a large business population in India may not accept cards.

Digital Nomad Visa in India

While a visa for digital nomads in India still doesn’t exist, its tourist visa allows for flexibility in travel for remote workers.

You can apply for a 1-month, 1-year or 5-year tourist e-visa all of which have provisions for multiple re-entries.

The 1-month visa allows two entries, while the latter two have no limits. Keep in mind that continuous stay during each visit cannot exceed 180 days for residents of the USA and Japan and 90 days for digital nomads of other nationalities

You can apply for it online, the visa takes about a week (or less) to process and you can present it at immigration after you land.

Experiences of Digital Nomads in India

Digital nomads in India enjoy travelling across the country – from the north to the south. Often they land in Delhi and head to the Himalayas from there – trekking, camping, working and enjoying warm mountain food. They then head down to Rajasthan to experience the land of the kings. If you want, you can also check out the northeastern states, but the infrastructure might not meet your remote work demands. From the mountains, you head down to the forests of the Western Ghats, the Konkan Coast, the southern-most tip of India and so on. There is plenty to do and experience in the country and all the time in the world may not be enough.

Best Time for Digital Nomads to Visit India

The image shows digital nomads in India in a forest in Naggar Himachal Pradesh India
No one wants to land in weather that feels like you’ve landed straight into hell. The best part about India is that different parts of the country are pleasant during different times of the year.

Obviously, the snowy mountains or the raging desert show extreme temperature forecasts throughout the year. However, depending on your weather preference, you can pick a particular city in India to visit at any time of the year.

For instance, while Delhi and Rajasthan can get really hot during summer, Himachal isn’t. On the contrary, it’s at that perfect temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius (in some villages such as Dharamkot) where everything is just pleasant. If you are someone who romanticises monsoons, you can head to the Northeastern states of India or experience it in Goa as well. The skies are grey, but the lands are draped in a lush green carpet that will make you swoon. However, here is a list of locations to visit during specific seasons:

Monsoons (June – September)

Monsoons in India last between June to September depending on what part of the country you are in. The rains come earlier to the southern states of India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Orissa, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra) and might be extremely delayed and scarce in certain northern states (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan).

Regardless, when it does rain, the weather is cool and temperatures don’t exceed 30 degrees Celsius. The best locations to visit during the monsoons are:
  • Himachal Pradesh (Dharamshala, Bir, Dharamkot)
  • Meghalaya (Shillong)
  • Kerala (Munnar, Varkala)
  • Goa (all of it!)
  • Puducherry
  • Karnataka (Coorg, Bengaluru)
  • Rajasthan (Udaipur, Mt Abu, Jaipur)
  • Sikkim (Gangtok)

Winters + Early Summer (November – March)

How cold it gets in India during winter depends on what part of the country you are in. The temperatures can range anywhere from -10 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius. If you are looking for snow, Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand are perfect. On the other hand, if you don’t mind a little brrr-weather, this is where you should go:
  • Delhi (8-9 °C)
  • Dharamkot (12 °C avg)
  • Varanasi (9-11 °C)
  • Goa (20-25 °C)
  • Kochi (23 °C)
  • Darjeeling (5-7 °C)

Summers (late March – June)

Summers in India are super hot throughout the country. Apart from the states along the Himalayas (Jammu, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Meghalaya) temperatures in the rest of the country go beyond 30 °C and touch 50 °C. You can visit the coastal areas where the sea makes everything feel alright or the mountains where everything is already alright.

Local Transportation in India

Travelling within and across India’s urban cities is relatively easier than navigating through its more rural parts. That said, the most frequented tourist destinations are well-connected by all modes of transport.

PLANES

India currently has 24 domestic airports and 103 domestic airports according to the Airport Authority of India. This makes travelling by air in India feasible and fast.

The most trusted airlines in the country currently are Vistara, Indigo and Air Asia.
Akasa Air is a newly launched airline in India which has good feedback but operates between a limited number of airports.

You can use Google Flights or Sky Scanner to get the best deals on your flights in India.

TRAINS

Trains connect the most remote of villages in India and the Indian railways are the world’s 4th largest rail network. While not all trains in India are as fast as those in Europe, the Rajdhani and the Shatabdi are two of the fastest lines that go to and from the National Capital of Delhi. The newly introduced Vande Bharat trains promise to reduce travel time between major cities by almost half.

You can book a train ticket in India on the IRCTC website. As a non-Indian, you need to pay an additional fee of INR 100 to make your account. After that, you can make a train reservation as per your preference.

Some things to know about trains in India:
  1. Most trains have sleeping berths. While the non-AC sleeper coach has 3 berths on each side facing one another, the AC 2-tier ones have two berths and the 1 AC coach offers even more privacy.
  2. Some trains have chair cars i.e. only seating.
  3. Your international card might create issues while making payments so make sure to try multiple payment methods or borrow a debit card from your Indian friend.
  4. You need to make a reservation to get a seat. When all the seats are booked, Indian railways start adding you to a waitlist. Depending on how much time you have before departure, you may or may not get a confirmed seat. If you don’t your ticket will be cancelled and your money refunded.
  5. If you get an RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) ticket, you still don’t have a confirmed seat but you are allowed to board the train where the Train Conductor will allot you a seat. Often RAC seats have a higher chance of confirmation.

Alternative booking apps for Indian Railways: Make My Trip

BUSES

Travelling by bus in India is a relatively comfortable and heartwarming experience. While some public buses might be overpacked and stuffy, private interstate buses are not. You can book a sleeper bus or a seating bus based on your preference.

Best apps to book a bus in India: Red Bus, Make My Trip, Yatra.com

Apart from the above-mentioned major modes of transportation in India, you can also book cabs for long and short journeys. Ideally, asking your hotel to help you with cabs for long-distance travel is recommended. For shorter distances, you can use apps like Ola, Uber or Blu.

Along with this, tuktuks and motorcycle cabs are common modes of transport that people can book to go around. Rapido is a good app to book these.
